Best Veterinary Solutions, Inc., has an immediate opening for a Transportation Director. This position is responsible for the performance of fleet operations and oversees the safety and compliance aspect of the entire fleet of BVS Transportation, including but not limited to combination vehicles, straight trucks and service vans companywide. The position leads all aspects of transportation capabilities, reviews all financial matters to ensure profitability, analyzes routing plans for efficiencies, promotes positive customer service, and ensures a safe working environment. This position can be based in our Corporate Office in Ellsworth, Iowa or our new facility in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Uses best practice transportation principles to optimize customer service, cost, and safety.
  • Budgets, maintains and analyzes the transportation department's monthly financials; uses results to develop and implement processes and policies.
  • Ensures operations match business needs and provides optimized on time and efficient service.
  • Oversees and directs work for the transportation department including drivers, and support staff. Directs and evaluates the performance of team members.
  • Responsible for Driver Qualification Files and Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse database for current employees and applicants.
  • Understands and adheres to Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrations (FMCSA), International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), Highway Use Tax (HUT), Hazmat safety permits (PHMSA and State Hazmat alliances), Unified Carrier Registration, Biennial Motor Carrier Identification report, Financial Responsibilities and Heavy Highway Use Form 229 rules and regulations.
  • Responsible for the annual operating plan for fleets and shops.
  • Maintains vendor relationships.
  • Responsible for the overall fleet strategy to optimize cost per mile/cost per lb.
  • Works collaboratively across departments to ensure timely reporting and problem resolution.
  • Develops and monitors fleet department safety, compliance and training programs.
  • Confers with organizational leadership to plan business objectives, develop organizational policies, and coordinate functions.
  • Investigates incidents, accidents, and driver-related injuries including accident investigation, accident reports, accident files, accident register with insurance companies, and follows up with the officials, claim’s office and adjusters, as necessary.
  • Develops and maintain written procedures (SOPs), documenting standard work and ensuring highest possible levels of productivity.
  • Approves changes, purchases, and divestitures of vehicles and equipment.
  • Oversees areas including but not limited to:
  • Titling, registration, insurance and renewal for new and existing vehicles ensuring records are kept up to date.
  • Regular communication with drivers to ensure all vehicles are being well maintained, kept clean and compliant.
  • Record Retention of electronic log data, hours of service, fuel purchased by state and quarterly IFTA filing.
  • Regular communication with all locations to keep current on transportation needs throughout the company.
  • Vehicle maintenance and recordkeeping for all fleet maintenance, oil changes, washes, and organization of equipment to ensure that vehicles are operating properly, equipped with necessary tools/parts/supplies, and always clean and neat in appearance.
  • Approve driver expenses reimbursement and company credit card charges to ensure compliance with company guidelines.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact with internal and external customers at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and multi-task various and conflicting responsibilities.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to deal with ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated hands-on data analysis and summarization skills, including advanced Excel and/or MS Access / SQL skills. Experience developing ad hoc reporting in enterprise tools is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an environment with multiple stakeholders and – at times – conflicting goals.
  • Ability to prioritize planned and reactive work on a daily basis, while maintaining progress on multiple priorities.

Education and Experience:

  • 7-10 years of transportation management experience or dispatch coordination environment of a multi-site distribution network.
  • 5 years of experience leading and managing a team with direct reports.
  • Knowledge of shipping and transportation operations.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and fleet management software systems.
  • Strong knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Possesses strong analytical and project management abilities demonstrating a track record of consistently achieving best-in-class KPIs across quality, on-time performance, and costs.

Physical Requirements:

  • Varying working conditions from climate-controlled distribution centers with and around industrial hazards, to working outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Physically capable of manual labor that includes lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and reaching.
  • Ability to walk and stand for extensive periods.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift over 50lbs regularly.
  • Ability to travel by car or plane on an as-needed basis to all BVS locations.
  • Required to carry a cell phone and be available to respond during working and non-working hours.
